Michael Henderson, a renowned soul leader, songwriter, and bassist, died yesterday (19) at the age of 71. He was taken to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta two weeks before for an unspecified sickness.

"Another sad note my close buddy Michael Henderson, has Pass R.I.P a brilliant performer that toured all over the globe with The Chi-Lites and Aretha Franklin for many many years, He will be miss [sic]," Marshall Thompson of soul and pop hitmakers the Chi-Lites said.
Henderson was widely recognized for his bass playing on various Miles Davis recordings, as well as his unforgettable vocals on Norman Connors' Top 10 soul ballads "Valentine Love" (in 1975, with Jean Carn) and "You Are My Starship" (in 1976). He subsequently had a string of successful solo albums, including classics like "Take Me I'm Yours" and "Wide Receiver."
Stevie and Miles both admired him.
Born on July 7, 1951 in Yazoo City, Mississippi, and reared in Detroit, his virtuosity on the bass drew the notice of Stevie Wonder, with whom he toured, playing on Stevie's 1970 UK CD Live at the Talk of the Town, which was released in the United States in 2005. This earned him the admiration of Davis, for whom he performed bass on jazz fusion albums such as Jack Johnson (1971), Live-Evil (1971), and Agharta (1971). (1975).
Henderson debuted as a solo artist in 1976 with Solid, which, like the rest of his repertoire, was self-produced and, most importantly, self-composed. It peaked at No. 10 on the R&B chart, the first of six straight Top 20 entries on that LP list for Buddah Records.
Goin' Places, released in 1977, included Herbie Hancock on Fender Rhodes, and both this and In The Night Time (1978) featured the legendary Ray Parker Jr. on guitar. The latter compilation was fueled by the smash "Take Me I'm Yours," and 1980's Wide Receiver, which included the title track single, was another success.
Henderson was an accomplished "quiet storm" soul balladeer, as he demonstrated on "Valentine Love" and "You Are My Starship," as he underscored again on his final significant success, 1981's "Can't We Fall In Love Again," with Phyllis Hyman. Henderson's last album, Bedtime Stories, was released in 1986 and included the Top 20 R&B smash "Do it To Me Good (Tonight)," after which he quit recording, leaving a collection of work that is still revered today.
